Hug a Tree in Observance of Arbor Day

Filed under: 55+/Active Adult, Milton, Woodstock — Tags: , — Kathy and Ben @ 7:56 am

Today  is National Arbor Day, a day to honor trees.  The history of Arbor Day is a history of celebration of the importance of trees to human life.  According to the Arbor Day Foundation, J. Sterling Morton in 1872 first proposed the adoption of Arbor Day.  Morton, a newspaper editor in Nebraska, used his writing skills to promote the value of planting trees to the newspaper’s readers.  In addition to providing fuel and building materials, he pointed out more importantly trees were needed for windbreaks to keep soil in place and provide shade in the hot sun.  He encouraged civic organizations and groups to join in the planting of trees which grew into a national movement to help land conversation.

We all know in Atlanta how important trees are.  They create a beatiful green canopy over our city.  It’s one of our best features.  So today be a tree hugger and appreciate their beauty.

Joyce Kilmer, poet, said it best in the poem Trees…

I THINK that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth’s flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,          5
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.   10

Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

*Spicing Up the Kitchen – Selling Your Home Part 3

Putting your home on the market is always a time to think about how to show off all the assets.  Homebuyers always focus on the kitchen, so staging your kitchen is very important.  First, think of sparkle and shine.  Clean and polish everything…cabinets, countertops, handles, floors.  After cleaning  and polishing, with a critical eye, decide what needs to be removed or replaced.

*Staging a Home for Sale

What is this new thing called “staging a home for sale“?  First it’s been around awhile and used mostly for high-end homes.  Today everyone watches HGTV and can see what rearranging a few pieces of furniture can do for a home.  Real estate agents have a home staged primarily for two reasons.  First, to make the home more appealing to a larger cross-section of buyers; the second reason is to get better photos.  Staging can be done by a professional home stager, the homeowner or the real estate agent.

The first thing anyone can do in staging and the most cost-effective tool is paint…you may love the chartreuse in the dining room, however no one else will, so for the cost of a gallon of paint and several hours of time you can make the buyers viewing your house want your home.  Staging is used to eliminate problems when possible…does the pink tile in the powder room need to be covered by wainscoting?  Arrange furniture so that the best features of the room stand out.  Put away that old oversized recliner while the home is for sale.  If you still are using your college desk, you may want to consider investing in a new one.  Consider whether you want a home buyer looking at the furniture or the room.  Staging is used to create harmony so that homebuyers focus on the positive attributes of your home.

With color and furniture arrangement done, the real estate agent is able to take interesting photos of your home.  Photos are the first impression for a home buyer! They use the photos to virtually walk thru a home, consider the size of rooms, and decide if the home would be somewhere they want to live.  Real estate agents use photos to tell the story of a home and neighborhood.  They create visual interest and excitementRemember a picture is worth a thousand words, so if you are selling your home, you want those words to portray your home in it’s best light.

Staging can be done with a nominal budget and a few days of time.  It’s one of the best investments a seller can make when putting their home on the market to sell!

*Downsizing for Changes in Lifestyle

We all come to that place in life where the home we live in no longer fits our requirements in a home.  Maybe the kids are gone and you do not need the room, the stairs are becoming too much for so many reasons, the neighborhood no longer fits your lifestyle.  No matter the reason, that change is a difficult decision.  Several things to consider in making a lifestyle change or downsizing  would be:

  • do you want only a smaller home in a neighborhood setting
  • do you want a different type of neighborhood
  • do you want to stay in the area or relocate

*What is an Active Adult Community?

Filed under: 55+/Active Adult, Woodstock — Tags: , — Kathy and Ben @ 8:00 am

Presently working with someone who wants to downsize due to kids growing up and not wanting to take care of a large home and yard.  Suggested they may want to look at an active adult community.  The response was I want my own place.  So what is an active adult community?

An active adult community is a neighborhood built primarily for mature adults.  Some neighborhoods have age restrictions; however, most do not in the metro Atlanta area.  When these communities are initially marketed by the builder, their advertising emphasizes the features attractive to active adults and does not encourage families with children.  Continue reading here…
